The ugly face of Islamophobia

Description

I feared this would happen if the Boston bombers turned out to be Muslim.

Since 9/11 this is a problem all Muslims/Sikhs/People-who-look-Middle-Eastern face. The following terrorist attacks and wars in Iraq and Afghanistan helped create a fear against Muslim-looking folks. Muslims are not terrorists. Unfortunately, they are labeled as such due to the incredibly small percentage of people who do become terrorists. I've met many normal Allah-followin' Muslims that have had to struggle with the discrimination that comes from prejudice.

Don't be an Islamophobe. Don't hate Muslims.

I'm not afraid. I like Muslims. And I haven't met many Sikhs but I bet I'd like them, too. We're not all like that. I like to think our attitudes have improved since 9/11. Maybe we're still not 100% improved, but I want to believe we're making progress. Just last week I saw a Muslim family at my supermarket and felt happy because it represented multiculturalism.

The Uncle Sam in this is obviously from an older, outdated period, but the newer generation, represented by the little blonde girl, seems fine with playing with him. I would like to think that while showing how such attitudes still exist in our culture, we Americans are making some progress in our relations with Muslims and other peoples of Middle Eastern origin.

While the idea isn't fresh, it is well-done in expressing prejudice that still pervades American consciousness. But I also hope that this picture also shows that newer generation is quick to grow out of its parents' behavior.

Well done!
