Description

Because racism is ok, especially in comics.

Cartoon characters that we grew up with as kids are riddled with blatant racism and stereotypes. Porky has a stutter, Bugs has an east coast accent, Speedy is a blatantly racist caricature of Mexicans, Daffy talks with a lisp. Do we censor these cartoons? Ban them? Not necessarily. These cartoons reflect the way Americans view their world, and they're the way we poke fun at our own bigotry.

Fun fact: Speedy Gonzales was temporarily banned from television in 1999. People fought to bring Speedy back and he was re-aired in 2002.

I loved watching Speedy Gonzales as a kid. And I'm Mexican. (Though, people don't dress the way Speedy does.)

Yay racism! And Ignorance!

I once got asked by an American if we had TV's when we lived in Mexico. I looked at her weirdly and said "Of course we did! In fact, we had three!" Apparently in her mind, we lived in Speedy's world. And that's what bad stereotypes do: misinform Americans about other cultures.

What? Someone asked you if you had TV at your place in Mexico?

We had a girl from Alaska once that moved here to Texas and went to my high school. She told us that people asked her if she lived in an igloo.
